YouTube Live now streaming select partners in real time
Not content with limiting its dominance in streaming uploaded videos, YouTube is now ready to take on competitors like Justin.TV and Ustream. The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that “The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead.”

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you’ll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You’re also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts — which will ensure you’re notified when a new episode is coming up.

Customizer App Handily Smoothes Over GRUB Trouble
Few things scare me more than disk partitioning and GRUB configuration software. Both of those chores involve knowledge about hard drive operations and a good slice of luck. And both can render a computer unbootable with one slight user error. So discovering the latest version of Grub Customizer helped lower my anxiety levels considerably.

This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled ‘version 3’, is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish — and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

If you don’t have Android 2.3 — or don’t want to root your phone to install the leaked Music app — take a look through our gallery, and then read on for our initial hands-on impressions.

iPhone 4S part costs breakdown compared to Nokia Lumia 900 illustrate Apple’s insane margins
Recent research from iSuppli shows that even though the iPhone 4S is more expensive than the Lumia 900, Apple actually pays less per part than Nokia does. The biggest individual price difference is between displays; Apple pays $37 for theirs, Nokia pays $58. All told, Apple pays $190 in parts, while Nokia pays $209, which leads to Nokia making a $241 margin per device, and Apple making $459.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app
William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won’t actually feature anything to do with William and Kate’s marriage — rather, it will focus on the “tradition, splendor and romance” that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. “[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29.”

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of ‘Royal App,’ won’t be available until April 18 — just 11 days before Kate’s big day. It won’t be free, either: it’ll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users
Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites — m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com — have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those — a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won’t be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook’s developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they’re using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn’t, you won’t be seeing much of Facebook Places — which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Creative HanZpad hurdles FCC, will deliver ICS and quad-core goodness to China

creative-hanzpad-fcc-quad-core-ICS-tab

Creative Labs might want to get some white gloves, because we recognized its fingerprints on the HanZPad, a Chinese tablet platform which just landed at the FCC. Using its own ZiiLABS division’s ZMS-40 ICS optimized SoC (system on chip), the thinnish 7.95mm tab looks to have meaty specs with a quad-core ARM 1.5GHz processor, 1280 x 800 10-inch IPS display, 1GB RAM and microSD slot allowing up to 64GB of external storage. On top of Android 4.0 support, Creative will be developing its own OS for the device, which will be distributed through OEMs and its own channels. While currently tapped for the Chinese market, Creative’s weighty US presence may suggest it’ll eventually reach across the Pacific — if it does, let’s just hope it leaves the smudges behind.

O’Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only
O’reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on OS X or Windows with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze
iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie — who else? — has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week — but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple’s updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers
windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

Phoenix project wants to rise from the ashes of webOS with open source wings

Phoenix project wants to rise from the ashes of webOS, with a touch of open source

It looks like webOS isn’t going quietly into the mobile OS retirement home. While its journey to open-source continues, an eager cabal of developers, fans and designers have decided to reignite the ill-fated operating system under the banner of Phoenix International Communications. Focusing its efforts on transporting open webOS to existing devices, both HP-made and otherwise, Phoenix also wants throw in some new features and fixes — presumably throwing in some extra software gems and UI tweaks. If it all goes to plan, the organization even wants to bring new webOS devices to market — a heady dream, but you’ve got to admire their pluck. Any webOS devotees out there can pledge their allegiance (and assistance) to the cause at the source below.
